Electronically Turning On and Off a Fan
Spring 2018
A Schmitt Trigger along with a transistor switch is used to turn on and off a DC motor.  If you replace the resistor with a light sensor or temperature sensor, this circuit can turn on and off a fan based upon light level or temperature.

Bass Boost
Spring 2015
The audio signal from a computer (or cell phone) is amplified and filtered to create a subwoofer.  A 3rd-order Butterworth filter is used to pass frequencies below 250Hz.  An amplifier boosts the voltages.  A push-pull amplifier then drives a 4 inch speaker.

Frequency Thermometer
Fall 2020
A 555 timer along with a thermistor is used to create a temperature-controlled oscillator.  By recording the frequency using a cell phone app, the temperature of various objects can be determined.

Electronic Candle
Fall 2018
An electronic circuit is built to simulate a flickering candle with an LED.  A random noise generator (from a cell phone app) is mixed with a sinewave.  The resulting signal drives an LED through a push-pull amplifier with a current output.

Sound on a Laser Beam
Fall 2018
An audio signal is transmitted 10 feet across the room using a laser diode and amplitude modulation.  On the receive side, a 4th-order Butterworth low-pass filter passes frequencies below 300Hz and then a push-pull amplifier drives an 8-ohm speaker.

yPlaying Jungle Bells over a Light Beam
Fall 2018
An audio signal is transmitted over a light beam using amplitude modulation.  A LDR sensor picks up the light sensor, which is then low-pass filtered with a 5th-order Chebychev low-pass filter.  A push-pull amplifier then drives an 8 Ohm speaker.

4th Order Butterworth LPF / Bass Boost
Fall 2018
A signal from a cell phone is amplified, passed through a 4th-order Butterworth low-pass filter, then amplified with a push-pull amplifier to drive a speaker.   When played alone, deep bass is passed to the speaker.  When a smaller speaker plays the raw signal, you can hear the song along with some head-banging bass.

Sound on a Light Beam
Fall 2018
An audio signal is transmitted using amplitude modulation on a light beam (white LED).  A light sensor picks up the light beam, which is amplified and sent to a push-pull amplifier.
